Your VDSL experience

Hi Guys!

I have placed my order for upgrade to 40Mbps VDSL, from a 10Mbps.

Just wanna know about real world speeds I can expect? (Please rule out exchange distance, router model etc as I know there are many variables that determine speeds)

Also, what is your brief experience with VDSL compared to ADSL?

Re: Your VDSL experience

Hi Quint,

I upgraded to a 40Mbps VDSl connection about a month ago and I must say the speed and stability of the line is amazing!!

I must mention that I am about 900m from the exchange.

With no devices on the line I easily average around 38Mbps down and 2.3Mbps upload.

If I download from a site like http://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx with Chrome I get 2.7MBps down and if I use a download accelerator like FlashGet the speed stays consistant at 4.7MBps (not 100% sure how accurate that is but definitly way faster than a browser)

Latency averages between 14ms and 25ms when pining 8.8.8.8

Hope this helps!!

Re: Your VDSL experience

Hi wdmyburgh,

Thank you so much for your response!

I can see the exchange from my house Smiley Wink So less than 100m.

I am super excited to upgrade to 40Mbps.

May I ask a massive favor? Could you run a ping test to UK? I am an avid online game (League of Legends) and their servers are sitting all the way in EUW, so I would love to know what the 40Mbps does to a server in UK. If not, I do thank you again for your great response Smiley Happy

Re: Your VDSL experience

Hi Quint,

Im not sure which addresses to do the ping test to... Here are a few, hope they are to the right servers.

Ping statistics for 95.172.65.1:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 198ms, Maximum = 228ms, Average = 202ms

Ping statistics for 216.52.241.254:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 335ms, Maximum = 473ms, Average = 344ms

Ping statistics for 104.160.131.1:
Packets: Sent = 50, Received = 50, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 270ms, Maximum = 284ms, Average = 271ms

Kind Regards

Re: Your VDSL experience

Hi wdmyburgh,

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Those are standard ping results - I did not expect a massive decrease in the ping.

Last question, what package you got for your 40Mbps?

I am planning on getting the 400GB Capped 40Mbps bundle from Afrihost at R1297 + R99 for Afrihost Plus so I get double data meaning I get 800GB <3.
