Very high network latency out of Durban

Hi,

I'm posting this under LTE, but it looks like Telkom is suffering some fairly serious network congestion on their backbone links which is causing huge amounts of latency in the evenings:

allan@Nuc:~# traceroute 8.8.8.8
traceroute to 8.8.8.8 (8.8.8.8), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets
1 192.168.0.3 (192.168.0.3) 1.064 ms 1.045 ms 1.027 ms
2 * * *
3 172.17.48.13 (172.17.48.13) 56.960 ms 56.997 ms 56.975 ms
4 172.17.48.21 (172.17.48.21) 56.016 ms 56.047 ms 56.039 ms
5 8ta-150-179-01.telkomadsl.co.za (41.150.179.1) 527.008 ms 527.035 ms 527.028 ms
6 196.25.188.73 (196.25.188.73) 966.775 ms 1019.886 ms 1019.887 ms
7 rrba-ip-lir-1-gig-3-0-0.telkom-ipnet.co.za (196.43.11.134) 1098.660 ms 1098.661 ms 1098.660 ms
8 72.14.212.1 (72.14.212.1) 1211.577 ms 1211.600 ms 1211.601 ms
9 72.14.239.33 (72.14.239.33) 1017.395 ms 72.14.239.53 (72.14.239.53) 931.299 ms 72.14.239.35 (72.14.239.35) 927.436 ms
10 google-public-dns-a.google.com (8.8.8.8) 1037.536 ms 1037.565 ms 1037.562 ms

It should go without saying that with the latency developing on the 5th hop, that the problem isn't in the last-mile access portion. I get amazing signal with direct line of site to my tower.

This hop is also apparently affecting users in the Port Elizabeth area (according to this post in a thread on mybroadband: Telkom Uncapped LTE Deal - My Trials So Far...,) so it would seem the issue is probably on their national network somewhere.

This is pretty much an everyday thing as we can see from this latency graph of ping to Google's 8.8.8.8:

Is anyone else in the greater Durban area having the same issue?

@ahouston
I'd take a rough guess and say the 5th hop needs a roll and some x-lax.

Re: Very high network latency out of Durban

Houston we have a problem! Smiley LOL

I am having the same issue from Pinetown every evening myself. I have spoken to two other people that have the same product and they are also having a hard time. The evenings are just REALLY bad. Even adsl on a okish day has a better connection over water but hop 5 is still well within SA from my understanding and is almost double the latency to the EU. This has been going on for a while now making anything latency dependant a nightmare.

1- <1 ms <1 ms <1 ms router

3- 180 ms 64 ms 94 ms 172.17.48.13

12 851 ms 888 ms 844 ms cache.google.com [105.187.242.30]

I am yet to see anything official from telkom about this though or any improvement? Thought this was meant to be a quality product but seems like either there is a major fault somewhere or the product has been over sold. Please shed some light Telkom.

Re: Very high network latency out of Durban

This seems to be a fairly recent thing, previously I got "a bit" of latency in the evenings - 200ms or so - which seemed a good tradeoff for the otherwise frankly astounding speeds.

It's definitely hit a crisis point in the last month or so as we can see from this graph:

Capture.JPGSmokeping stats to 8.8.8.8

From around the beginning of June we've gone up to 1100ms peaks - factoring in a few milliseconds here or there for routers to switch the traffic at ASIC level, thats about how long it would take to send your packet around the circumference of the earth 7 times. Which is a bit much. Really.

The problem with Telkom is that when everything is good, it can actually be a pleasure to be a customer, but when things go wrong it's easy to feel like a faceless number out in Revenue Land with no real way to get your complaint heard.

Sigh. At least I'm not the only one, and can take some solace in the fact that I'm not suffering alone.

Re: Very high network latency out of Durban

Same thing here.....at the same node

Google DNS ping over Time

Do you think they under provisioned and over sold, or do you think it is an error?

Smokeping

Do you think it is a case of under provisioned and over sold? or do you think it is hardware, network failure?
