Telkom today announced the launch of its ground breaking new entertainment offering. LIT is a first-of-its-kind streaming service giving its customers access to on-demand movies, series, online video and music through some of the world’s most popular online content providers.

In this South African first, Telkom unveiled LIT Video and LIT Music, offering zero rated video and music streaming to select content partners for its FreeMe 2GB and up customers. LIT Video and LIT Music will be available from 01 September.

Telkom also announced the imminent launch LIT TV, offering Unlimited ADSL, Fibre and LTE SmartBroadband customers the Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box which allows customers to transform their TV into a smart TV, with pre-loaded content channels from our content providers.  LIT TV will be launched in September with our Summer Campaign.

The Next Step in the Data Revolution

Speaking at a media event in Johannesburg today, Telkom Consumer CEO Mr Attila Vitai reflected on the Company’s strategy to take the lead in the data market with the goal of offering customers a compelling entertainment proposition.

“Last year, we revolutionised the mobile industry by launching FreeMe, giving South Africans access to data at a cost that was previously unimaginable. This year, we launched Unlimited Home, giving fixed-line consumers unlimited data and higher speeds,” he said.

“We have already focused on disrupting the data market. Now, we are upping our game to provide our customers with a compelling proposition for all the data we’ve given them. Our LIT offer enables South Africans to access world-class, on demand, streaming content, without incurring additional data costs. We believe this is a game changer.”

Free YouTube Streaming on Mobile

Telkom has partnered with the most popular content providers to give our customers unlimited access to the content whenever they want, wherever they are.

For LIT Video, Telkom has partnered with Showmax, Netflix, YouTube and Google Play. For Lit Music, Telkom has partnered with Google Play Music, Apple Music and Simfy Africa. This means that when customers stream content from these sites it will not be deducted from their FreeMe data bundle.

“This innovation is aimed at really transforming the way South Africans consume digital entertainment. By removing the worry of additional data costs we are putting unlimited entertainment in the hands of our consumers,” explain Vitai.

Although subscription costs for content providers are not included, they can be deducted directly from the customers’ Telkom account through our reverse carrier billing option with certain of our content providers.

“We are excited to be offering free YouTube streaming particularly as this is a free content platform. The popularity of YouTube is unparalleled – we believe that this offer as well as our zero rated music streaming offer will be a huge drawcard for new customers,” he added.

Transforming your TV into an Entertainment Hub

LIT TV includes a media streaming box and is designed for large screen TVs offering a completely new TV viewing experience.

The Android TV™ device allows consumers to truly customise their TV viewing, marking a break away from linear TV viewing. The current content partners for LIT TV are ShowMax, YouTube, DSTV and Google Play™ Store. Customers can choose exactly what they want to watch both from our subscription based partners as well as a host of free content options from the Google Play Store allowing them to design a personalised entertainment hub. Devices powered by Android TV have Chromecast™ built-in so you can cast your favourite entertainment apps to your TV.

Telkom’s LIT TVC 100 media box is both Google certified and approved by the Independent Communication’s Authority of South Africa.

Mahir Sahin, Head of Africa, Android Platform Partnerships at Google says,"We are very thrilled to see Telkom launching the first Android TV certified set-top box in South Africa with our popular services like YouTube & Google Play built-in.  Google Play will bring the world of content, apps and games to Telkom subscribers' living room."

The device is compatible with android and IOS – allowing your smartphone to be a keypad or voice enabled remote control for the streaming box. “Customers can also search for a particular topic and the box has built-in intelligence to aggregate content from all the content channels related to the search topic.

“Today marks the first step in Telkom’s content offering. We already have more content partners in the pipeline and our ambitions in this space extend beyond today’s significant announcement,” concluded Vitai.

Are existing SmartBroadband Wireless subscribers (I have been on 20GB package a number of years) also allowed to switch on this _LIT option on their accounts? If so, where is an explanation on how to go about doing so? Thank you

All good and well .... How the hell do u activate the LiT device/service when u r on a SmartBroadband Wireless 100GB @ R1049 + R40 (LiT). And no it's no activated automatically (It has to b if u want to use the 50gb "fup" that's allowed on the LiT). "Customer service" has NO idea what's going on. And it is not anywhere in the web portal.

To whom it may concern

I have an existing telkom landline and fibre connection through vumatel, Telkom is my service provider for the fibre data

Do I qualify for free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box

I've asked to be put on an unlimited home plan as well, but was told i can't as vumatel is my fibre infrustructure provider

I've even went to the store and placed  a 24 month order on vumatel and also requested that all my services be migrated to vumatel

My landline and adsl service was disconnected for two days. telkom said a technician will be dispatched within 24 hours to setup my data, which never happened, therefore i decided to signup for the 12 month telkom contract that show up at shop.vumatel.co.za

The store also adviced me that vumatel would complete the order, that i should receive the free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box together with the fibre data and voice installation. its almost been a month and no one assisted me with fibre voice or advising me of free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box, only thing i was told is that i don't qualify for free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box

On the telkom website it states a different story, it says, no free Telkom LIT TVC 100 media box on a month to month contract, doesn't state anything about a 12 month contract, its still on the website under their unlimited home deal which they not affording me the opportunity to, which costs more as voice and data are seperate services, although serveral website state telkom teamed up with vumatel, but telkom isn't able to provide fibre voice over vumatel network, and at that time when i put my order in, telkom never differenciated their fibre offering between telkom/openserve and vumatel, so what is the difference now, there shouldn't be discreptancies on which infrastructure provider the customer is using since telkom failed to provide a 20 mb fibre/vdsl service. And customer sticking with telkom for data and voice as it offers the most value, yet Telkom Voice can't be migrated to vumatel, and telkom tells customer they not eligible although their customer went through the correct channels

I moved off my 10mb adsl service as the exchange i was connecting to had become problematic and had adsl issues weekly, vumatel rolled out which is working perfectly, but still having issues with voice on the analogue line, the line is soft or fades, when it rains the line is scratchy, sometimes dead

Your assistance in this regard is highly appreciated

Kind Regards

Valjon Smith
